Is your home smoke alarm compliant?
Six questions. Two minutes. You'll know where you stand against the 1 January 2027 Queensland rules, and what it costs to fix.
Every Queensland home must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms, hardwired or 10-year battery, in every bedroom, connecting hallway and storey by 1 January 2027. This checker tells you whether yours already do.

Common questions
Is this checker official?
No. It is a guide based on the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (Domestic Smoke Alarms) legislation and the Queensland Fire Department placement rules. A licensed electrician inspecting the home is the only way to be certain. The result tells you what we would expect to find.
What if I don't know whether my alarms are photoelectric?
Take one down and look at the back. Ionisation alarms carry a radiation symbol and usually the words 'ionisation' or 'Am-241'. Photoelectric alarms say 'photoelectric' or 'optical'. If in doubt, answer no and we will check on site.
How do I know if my alarms are interconnected?
Press and hold the test button on one alarm. If every alarm in the house sounds, they are interconnected. If only that one sounds, they are not.
